Visiting CPD Workshop for
Primary & Secondary Senior Leadership Teams

  • Who is the workshop aimed at?

This workshop is aimed at head teachers, deputy heads, assistant head teachers, teaching and learning coordinators, and any senior leadership staff.

We welcome the opportunity to visit you at your school to deliver our unique course on either a one-to-one basis or any small group of senior leadership teams.

    Why not whole-school CPD?

It's important to understand that while this workshop benefits the whole school, the power to bring about real change within a school lies in its foundations, and therefore in the hands of senior management.

It is the duty of senior leadership to instigate and manage the signals that will evoke positive emotional reactions in staff and students. YOU have the power to shape your school brand, ethos, aspirations and values. But... and this really is key - the REACTION to this must be a natural one.

Your school must take full ownership of any implementations made as a result of this course, and ensure they are not perceived as being a mere by-product of an external resource.

So whilst you have the power to shape your school brand - or ethos - at the core of your school, ultimately it's not what YOU say it is... it's what THEY say it is.

  • How can your school benefit from this workshop?

    Well, it's all about CONSISTENCY...

The 'C' word is floating about everywhere in a school - consistency in discipline, rewards, procedures, marking and assessment, language... and so on.

But what about consistency of presentation? Consistency of how school values and ethos are delivered? A consistency of attitudes and aspirations? How can a school expect consistency from learners if the school itself is inconsistent in its messages. And yes, your school's messages are EVERYWHERE...

On a handwritten notice pinned to a store cupboard, an A4 handout in the ubiquitous Comic Sans, a newsletter, report card, display wall, worksheet, Powerpoint presentation, computer desktop background - even the school's main sign... the opportunity for INCONSISTENT messages is huge - and very likely in most schools.

But consistency of messages is not just about a font or colour, or even 'brand language' - it goes much deeper than that.

Inconsistency across presentation within a school sends messages of being disjointed, unreliable, uncommitted and unfocussed. These messages are inadvertently absorbed by staff and students, and subsequently this is reflected in their performance and productivity.

BUT if your school's messages are presented in a strong and consistent manner, you are sending out positive signals about your school's attitudes, standards, attention to detail and reliability. And in turn, these attributes become instilled in your staff and pupils.

A consistent brand identity is a highly effective - if not essential - way to communicate your school's values and aspirations.

The learning objectives of this workshop are to enable you to:

    • Effectively analyse and assess your current school's ethos/branding
    • Understand what constitutes an effective branding
    • Prepare an action plan to make positive and attainable steps to execute whole-school improvements

And some of the workshop highlights...

    • Identify your school's 'USP'
    • Assess your current ethos
    • Create surveys to help shape your new improved ethos
    • Create and distribute 'brand elements' packs
    • Identify brand reinforcement opportunities
    • How to produce display materials, student & staff documents to reinforce school ethos values
    • How to produce branded INSET teaching improvement strategies
(e.g active learning, differentiation, group work, higher order thinking, visible progress etc)
    • How to implement evaluation and improvement of strategies

In short - all the ideas and strategies in this workshop are designed to INSPIRE and MOTIVATE.
An inspired and motivated teacher delivers inspirational and motivating lessons.
An inspired and motivated pupil...you get the idea!

  • Who delivers the workshop?

This new and unique course is delivered by
    Simon Tebbenham, BA(Hons), PGCE.

Please allow me to introduce myself...

My teaching journey started as Head of Music, Performing Arts and Media Studies in an 11-18 comprehensive school in 1999. My creative journey and passion for creative flair started many years before.

I was often found 'misspending' my youth in broadcast studios following my father's career in television. At fourteen years of age I had managed to compose and record music for retail videos, work as a sound engineer on a host of corporate videos and create motion graphics and dubbing tracks back in the studio.

Following my graduation from University College Salford with a BA(Hons) in Band Musicianship, and leading up to studying for my PGCE at Didsbury, Manchester, I juggled my time working as a broadcast cameraman, working on news, sport and live outside broadcasts commissioned by the BBC, ITV Sport, SKY Sports and spent time capturing the movements of the rich and famous, as a camera operator at the Bloomberg Financial News Channel broadcast from the City of London.

Following two years as a teacher in mainstream education, I decided, along with my family, to follow the sun and head south to Spain... a stint that lasted a decade.

This is where my passion for graphic design, branding, marketing and printing began.

I worked as a graphic designer for an English language newspaper before being snapped up by a magazine publisher where I became Art Director for a catalogue of high-end magazines. I then headed up a creative design agency, producing adverts for local, national and international companies before starting my own business as a design, print and marketing agency.

Having worked with a plethora of companies on their branding and marketing campaigns, as well as design coaching and consultation work with publishing companies, upon returning to the UK it hit me that there was an enormous need for branding, design and presentation in the education arena. And although I believe the need to be very large, it is becoming apparent that one of my biggest challenges, even more so than in industry, is communicating the essence of branding - or as we like to say in schools: Ethos.

Branding is such a scary word to an educator. It's scary to a lot of businesses too! Believe me. Yet the concept is so simple - decide on your ethos and stick to it... in EVERYTHING that you do.

A first reaction for many is that branding is an expense and that they don't 'need' it. But a brand isn't an option or a bolt-on that can be forged into an existing organisation - it's always there and is the heart of every organisation, whether you pay it any attention or not.

Sadly in some areas of the commercial world there is a lot of pretentiousness and over-elaboration when it comes to branding, which certainly doesn't help my cause! But this is something I'm committed to avoid - a good brand doesn't need to be expensive, elaborate or complicated - quite the opposite. Simple and effective carries great weight, and I'm keen to show schools the way forward. Not just in terms of knowledge and understanding, but in how to cost-effectively implement strategies, motivate and inspire both pupils and staff, and subsequently the quality of teaching and learning, and pupil achievement.

  • How can teaching & learning be improved with 'branding'?

Focussing on your brand or 'ethos' does not mean spending thousands of pounds with marketing 'experts' developing new logos.

In fact, many schools that have spent money on a 're-brand' fail to deliver on converting the investment into improvements across the curriculum. This course reveals how you can achieve improvements in the quality of teaching and achievement of pupils without a huge budget, and guides you through the steps to take to avoid your makeover efforts being only skin-deep.

Case Study - Highfields School, Derbyshire

Above: Branded Staff Teaching and Learning Booklets produced by Tutor Simon Tebbenham with Assistant Headteacher and Teaching & Learning Coordinator Damian O'Reilly of Highfields School

The whole-school teaching and learning materials above are just one simple example of how branded materials help to inspire and motivate staff, as well as provide a connectivity with a school's mission.

The implementation of this set of materials played a significant part in helping Highfields School raise their Ofsted results, and the sets were received with great enthusiasm by teachers.

The learning booklets were delivered as whole-school INSET materials, and posters and displays were also created as visual aids to drive the momentum and reinforce the messages in the classroom.

The CPD workshop contains more than twenty-five effective school brand strategies like the ones implemented at Highfields. The workshop is accompanied by an interactive manual which contains a multitude of quality references, ideas and examples of how schools can realise their potential, and put into place effective elements to drive their school ethos forward.

A few words on the scary word 'brand'...

Many people associate the word 'brand' with a logo, advert, slogan or marketing.
And that's not what it's all about.
A brand is intangible - it's about making an emotional connection.

A brand, developed by the power of consistent presentation, should assist in reflecting the values and beliefs of your school. This isn't as daunting or difficult to achieve as you might imagine. Going back to basics and unifying your team with a clear focus and sense of direction can make an amazingly quick and effective difference to any institution.

The core of any successful brand is surprisingly simple. When the focus is clear, concise and inclusive - the REACTION to the brand simply happens.

  • Testimonials

The workshop is delivered by Simon Tebbenham.
Here are just some of the nice things people have said about Simon and his work...

"Simon Tebbenham and his firm assisted me and rebranded the Round Town Newspaper in spectacular form 3 years ago, a re-branding which changed the way the readers and advertisers perceived the newspaper. Simon's ideas, creativity, foresight and tuition were worth every penny we spent, and still to this day I regularly use the attributes and teachings that Simon delivered. Branding is not a one-off event, it is a journey, and having Simon there to guide and show you the way will be one of the most worthwhile decisions you will ever make."

Roddy Cunningham BA(Hons) ACIB - Black Tower Finance & Female Focus Magazine

"Simon has worked with me on a wide variety of school projects and always delivers the highest standard of materials. Not only in terms of supplying artwork to enhance our school identity, but also in delivering effective resources that are used on a regular basis within the classroom, to stimulate and assist teachers and learners. People often remark on how good the materials look, which inspires me to push the concepts further and wider within the school."

Damian O'Reilly - Assistant Headteacher, responsible for Teaching & Learning and CPD

"Simon has branded and re-branded our website and marketing messages several times over the past 7 years. With an increasingly competitive market it is absolutely essential that we give clear concise buyer aware messages – and this is something that Simon never fails to do for us. With his creativity and passion, which shows in all aspects of his work, from graphic design to fresh brand awareness and of course excellent client care, Simon provides a complete package for us.
